528 Hz: tradition and evidence

A traditional or spiritual practice, not a scientific claim.

Where does it come from?

The medieval solfège syllables (ut, re, mi…) are real music history, but today's list assigning hertz values to them is a modern interpretation, popularised by a non-peer-reviewed book published in 1999. In that list 528 Hz corresponds to "mi".

What did studies find?

In a small study, salivary cortisol fell and tension scores decreased after 528 Hz music; randomisation and blinding were not reported. In a randomised trial with students in Türkiye some salivary biomarkers changed, but attention-test performance did not. What these changes mean in everyday life is unclear, and the findings have not been independently replicated.

What does the evidence say?

There is one small study and one biomarker trial; it has not been reliably shown that 528 Hz reduces stress.

What do we know?
In a small 9-person study, salivary cortisol fell and tension scores decreased after 528 Hz music; randomization and blinding were not reported. In a randomized trial with 162 students in Türkiye, 528 Hz music raised salivary BDNF and CREB.
What don't we know?
What these biomarker changes mean for everyday stress is unclear; attention-test performance did not differ between groups in the same trial. The findings have not been independently replicated.
