Delta waves (below 4 Hz)

When is delta seen?

In adults delta activity is most prominent in the deep sleep of the first half of the night. Dominant delta activity while awake is not typical.

Listening to a beat at this band's rate has not been shown to move the brain into that band; a weak EEG response may appear at the beat rate, but it is not known to change mental states reliably.

In sleep sessions the beat descends slowly from the theta band to the delta band; it is a listening routine and makes no medical claim. Sleep sessions ask you to confirm you are not driving before they start.

What does the evidence say?

The brain may show a weak response at the beat frequency; this response has not been shown to reliably change mental state.

▲ C · Preliminary/mixed evidence
What do we know?
The brainstem responds at the two tone frequencies, while a measurable EEG response at the beat frequency can occur in the cortex; for binaural beats it is weaker than for monaural beats and weakens further under white-noise masking.
What don't we know?
In a review of 14 EEG studies, only 5 were consistent with the entrainment hypothesis and 8 contradicted it. It has not been shown that this response reliably changes mental state; in one study mood did not change at all.
Sources and review note

Research on sleep is at an early stage; there are small pilot studies.

▲ C · Preliminary/mixed evidence
What do we know?
Two small pilot studies reported positive results: in an uncontrolled study, the sleep diaries of 20 students improved; in a 10-person lab study, binaural beats with a varying beat difference shortened the time to fall asleep.
What don't we know?
Comparison conditions are weak (no control or a silent night) and samples are very small. A systematic review of music and binaural beats in young adults could not run a meta-analysis because studies were heterogeneous; small samples further limit certainty. In a home study of 221 people, binaural, monaural and beat-free monotonous sounds made no difference to sleep latency.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to sleep with a delta beat?
At a low volume no serious risk has been reported. Instead of wearing headphones all night, you can choose headphone-free sessions or a quiet speaker.
