Traditional / experimental practice

What does the CIA "Gateway" document really say?

A traditional or spiritual practice, not a scientific claim.

What is the document?

The report is an analysis that tries to explain an institute's sound and meditation programme using concepts from physics and consciousness. Being held in a government archive does not mean its content was verified or represents an official view; archives keep many ideas that were examined, assessed and then shelved.

The document contains no controlled experiment, measurement or statistical result; it contains theoretical explanations and interpretations.

What is known today

Binaural beats can produce a weak EEG response at the beat rate, but this has not been shown to change mental states reliably. Out-of-body experiences are described in neurology, but there is no controlled evidence that sound causes astral travel.

Frekans Studio does not use trademarked programme names as product or session names; its explore sessions are its own original rituals.

What does the evidence say?

The brain may show a weak response at the beat frequency; this response has not been shown to reliably change mental state.

▲ C · Preliminary/mixed evidence
What do we know?
The brainstem responds at the two tone frequencies, while a measurable EEG response at the beat frequency can occur in the cortex; for binaural beats it is weaker than for monaural beats and weakens further under white-noise masking.
What don't we know?
In a review of 14 EEG studies, only 5 were consistent with the entrainment hypothesis and 8 contradicted it. It has not been shown that this response reliably changes mental state; in one study mood did not change at all.
Sources and review note

An experimental listening ritual; it makes no claim of astral travel or of consciousness leaving the body.

✦ T · Traditional/spiritual practice
What do we know?
Out-of-body experience is a described neurological phenomenon; research links it to a failure to integrate bodily sensory information at the brain's temporo-parietal junction.
What don't we know?
There is no controlled evidence that sound leads to astral travel or that consciousness separates from the body.

Frequently asked questions

Is the document fake?
No, it is a real archive document. But being a real document doesn't show that the claims in it are true.
