What are singing bowls and sound baths?

How does a bowl make its sound?

When the bowl is struck or its rim is rubbed with a mallet, several vibration modes sound at once. These partials are not exact multiples of the fundamental as on a string instrument; they give the bowl its characteristic, slightly metallic colour. Two modes very close in pitch can produce a slow wobble ("wah-wah").

Sound baths

In a sound bath, participants usually lie down while a practitioner plays bowls, gongs and similar instruments in turn. It is a practice of listening and resting; the "bath" in the name is a metaphor.

Research

A systematic review of the health effects of singing bowls found only 4 peer-reviewed studies, two with low-level designs. Improvements in mood and some physiological measures were reported, but the authors do not yet recommend singing bowl practices because of the few studies and risk of bias.

In Frekans Studio

Bowl-like sounds are synthesised on the device, not recorded. That is why the bowl evidence is not linked to sessions; sessions with bowls are labelled ○ claim-free soundscapes.

What does the evidence say?

Singing bowls are a traditional listening practice; evidence on their effects is very limited.

What do we know?
A systematic review found only 4 peer-reviewed studies on singing bowls; improvements in mood and some physiological measures were reported.
What don't we know?
There are very few studies and the designs are weak; the authors do not yet recommend singing bowl practices. The studies used real bowls; bowl-like tones generated on the device are not linked to this evidence.

Frequently asked questions

What frequency is a singing bowl?
Every bowl differs: size, wall thickness and material set its fundamental and partials. Specific frequency names such as "chakra bowl" are sales labels.
Is a sound bath suitable for everyone?
Gongs and bowls can be very loud up close; don't lie too near the instruments and move away if you feel uncomfortable. Lying still for a long time may not suit everyone either.
