Pre-Task Warm-Up · Alpha 10 Hz
Listen for 10 minutes before you start a task.
How is it made?
- Binaural · Left 215 Hz · Right 225 Hz · Beat 10 Hz (Alpha)
Sound is generated on this device in real time; no files are downloaded from a server. There is a 5 s fade-in at the start and a 0 min fade-out at the end.
Evidence
C · Preliminary/mixed evidenceSmall trials or pilot studies; inconsistent results.
In one meta-analysis, listening before the task gave better results.
Evidence level C: Preliminary/mixed evidence- What do we know?
- In a meta-analysis's moderator analysis, listening before the task (or before and during it) gave better results than listening only during it, and longer listening increased the effect.
- What don't we know?
- This rests on a moderator comparison within one meta-analysis; few experiments test the question directly, and in a small experiment that directly varied onset time, results were mixed. The overall effect itself is debated (see the focus claim).
Evidence is weak and conflicting; in some studies binaural beats lowered test performance.
Evidence level C: Preliminary/mixed evidence- What do we know?
- Two meta-analyses found a moderate overall effect: one on memory and attention only (g = 0.40), the other also pooling anxiety and pain (g = 0.45); they partly share studies. In a small parametric study, 40 Hz beats with a low (340 Hz) carrier and a white-noise background improved general attention but did not prevent attention from declining over time.
- What don't we know?
- Results conflict. In two home experiments with 1,000 people in total, 5 Hz and 15 Hz beats lowered reasoning-test scores, while silence and other sounds had no effect. In a 58-person study, 40 Hz beats did not affect attention. Positive findings need replication. In a three-experiment study, 16 Hz binaural beats did not improve sustained attention; the combined data gave evidence against this hypothesis.
A session's level is the weakest of its linked claims; it is never raised by a strong but unrelated claim.
Keep your device volume comfortable, preferably below 60%. You can also use your device's headphone-safety settings.
